Guidelines for splenectomy include:

  • Congenital or acquired hemolytic anemia
  • Idiopathic thrombocytopenia
  • Trauma to the spleen
  • Lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin's disease
  • Portal hypertension and hypersplenism
  • Hereditary spherocytosis
