Croup
Overview
Croup is a common illness in children, most often caused by a virus. It causes infection and swelling of the voice box (larynx) and windpipe (trachea). This swelling narrows the airway and causes hoarseness and a bark-like cough. If the cough gets more frequent or severe, the child may have high-pitched breath sounds (stridor) and problems breathing. Croup often can be treated at home with supportive care. In some cases, hospitalization may be needed.
